Perfect 3-Day Malta Itinerary: A Local's Guide
After living in Malta for 3 years, I've hosted countless friends and family, helping them make the most of short visits. Here's my tried-and-tested 3-day itinerary that covers the island's highlights while avoiding tourist traps.
Day 1: Valletta & The Three Cities
Morning in Valletta
Start your Malta adventure in Valletta, the fortress capital built by the Knights of St. John. Arrive by 8:45 AM to beat the crowds at St. John's Co-Cathedral (€15 entrance). The austere exterior hides an explosively baroque interior and houses Caravaggio's masterpiece "The Beheading of St. John."
- Visit the Upper Barrakka Gardens (free) for sweeping harbor views
- Watch the noon cannon firing at the Saluting Battery
- Stroll down Republic Street, noting the colorful gallariji (enclosed balconies)
Lunch Break
For an authentic Maltese lunch, choose between:
- Rubino - historic restaurant known for daily specials
- Nenu The Artisan Baker - traditional ftira and baked dishes
- Legligin - cozy wine bar with Maltese tasting plates
Afternoon in the Three Cities
Take the traditional water taxi (€3) across the Grand Harbor to Birgu (Vittoriosa). The crossing offers spectacular views of Valletta's bastions.
- Explore Fort St. Angelo (€8) - Malta's maritime heart
- Wander Vittoriosa's narrow streets and marina
- Visit the Malta Maritime Museum if time permits
Evening
Return to Valletta for sunset drinks at Bridge Bar (live jazz on Fridays) or Café Society, followed by dinner at Harbour Club with Grand Harbor views.
Day 2: Mdina, Rabat & Southern Malta
Morning in the Silent City
Take Bus 52 from Valletta to Mdina (45 minutes). Arrive early to experience the medieval silence before tour groups.
- Walk the complete bastions for panoramic views
- Visit St. Paul's Cathedral and its museum
- Explore Palazzo Falson - a perfectly preserved noble house
- Fontanella Tea Garden for famous chocolate cake and bastion views
Lunch in Rabat
Walk to neighboring Rabat to explore St. Paul's Catacombs (€5), then enjoy a traditional ftira at Crystal Palace (known locally as 'Is-Serkin').
Afternoon Choice
Choose between two southern highlights:
- Option A: Blue Grotto boat trip (€8) and Ħagar Qim temples
- Option B: Marsaxlokk fishing village, photo-famous harbor, and Sunday fish market
Evening
Head to St. Julian's for dinner at Piccolo Padre (waterfront pizza) or Barracuda (high-end seafood). Follow with drinks in Paceville if you're feeling energetic.
Day 3: Comino or Northern Malta
Summer Option (May-October)
Comino and Blue Lagoon: Take the early ferry (before 9 AM) from either Cirkewwa or Sliema (€20-35 return). Pro tip: walk 10 minutes to Crystal Lagoon for equally beautiful waters and fewer crowds.
Winter Option (November-April)
Explore Malta's northern highlights:
- Golden Bay beach and hiking trails
- Mellieha World War II shelters
- Popeye Village (€15) - charming film set turned attraction
- Red Tower for sunset views
Practical Tips
Transportation
- Get a Tallinja card (€21 for 7 days unlimited bus travel)
- X1 or X2 bus from airport to Sliema (€2)
- Avoid taxis - use Bolt app instead
Where to Stay
Base yourself in Sliema or St. Julian's for best transport connections and restaurant options. Avoid Paceville if you're sensitive to night noise.
What to Skip
- Avoid Blue Grotto and Comino between 11 AM - 4 PM (overcrowded)
- Skip the Malta Experience show - outdated
- Don't waste time at the Valletta shopping streets - focus on historical sites
This itinerary gives you a perfect mix of history, culture, and seaside relaxation. Remember, Malta's charm lies in its unhurried pace - don't try to pack in too much. Leave time for unexpected discoveries and lengthy Mediterranean lunches!
